Closed shield tunnel boring machines

Eurohinca (Europea de Hincas Teledirigidas, S.A.), Trenchless specialist since 1996 - 14 TBMs and >120 km executed.

We operate closed shield tunnel boring machines (EPB/water shield) for crossings and service tunnels with pressure control, alignment, and watertightness. See closed shield (EPB), hydro shield, segment tunnel y microtunneling (MTBM) — support for choice of tunnel boring machine y technical assistance and engineering; see references.

Tunnel construction: Hydroshield and EPB

At EUROHINCA, we specialize in tunnel construction using closed-shield tunnel boring machines, known as Hydroshield y EPB (Earth Pressure Balance). These machines are perfectly suited for soft terrain, unstable ground, or areas with high water content.

We have international experience in underground construction projects, such as urban sewer tunnels y drainage works, where these techniques have proven to be effective.

Subway tunnels with closed shield tunnel boring machines (TBMs)

Thanks to their ability to control pressure at the excavation face, closed-shield tunnel boring machines are ideal for urban environments, coastal areas, or unstable soils. The EPB uses the excavated material itself as support, while the hydroshield uses a bentonite slurry to ensure stability.

Service Specifications for Closed-Shield Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB and Slurry)

Closed-shield tunnel boring machines (EPB and slurry) are used in soil conditions where it is necessary to control the pressure from the front to ensure ground stability and minimize surface settlement. This service is defined by the following technical parameters and application criteria:

Main applications: Microtunnels and mechanized tunnels in loose, sandy, silty, clayey, mixed, or saturated soils; projects beneath sensitive urban areas, existing infrastructure, waterways, roads, and areas at risk of landslides.

Types of shields:
EPB (Earth Pressure Balance): It works by balancing the pressure at the face using the excavated material that has been processed.
Slurry / Hydro-shield: It uses pressurized slurry to stabilize the face in granular, saturated, or high-water-pressure soils.

Compatible land conditions: Non-cohesive soils, materials prone to collapse, saturated sands, mixed soils, and conditions with a high water table. The choice between EPB and slurry depends on the permeability, strength, and behavior of the soil.

Range of diameters and lengths: Suitable for microtunnels and medium- or large-diameter tunnels, with lengths determined based on the construction method, the jacking system, and the structural design of the lining.

Construction method: Mechanized excavation in a pressurized chamber, with control of torque, thrust, and advance; material extraction via an auger (EPB) or a slurry circuit and separation plant (Slurry). The lining is typically constructed using reinforced concrete segments or driven pipe, depending on the project.

Civil Engineering and Logistics Requirements: Shafts or tunnel portals with sufficient space for the tunnel boring machine, grouting systems, a slurry/bentonite plant, electrical equipment, and ventilation. Requires areas for the storage, assembly, and transport of tunnel segments or pipe.

Control and Guidance Systems: Continuous monitoring of chamber pressure, thrust, cutting torque, excavated volume, support pressures, and alignment using lasers or gyroscopes, ensuring geometric tolerances and stability.

Quality control and safety: Monitoring of excavation parameters, pressure balance control, face stability, joint sealing, ventilation, safe access, and compliance with HSE protocols in confined spaces and urban environments.

Closed Shield: Rapid Response

What Is a Hydro-Shield?

A hydro shield (closed-shield) is a type of tunnel boring machine/microtunneling machine that operates with a pressurized face using a slurry system, and the choice of machine depends on the ground conditions and the project. For a general guide to selecting the right machine, you may find this helpful choice of tunnel boring machine.

When to use

It is used when the project requires a closed shield and the design approach must be adapted to environmental and site conditions. To compare with other closed-shield systems, see EPB or an overview of closed shield tunnel boring machines.

What are closed shield TBMs?

Closed shield tunnel boring machines are machines used in tunnel excavation. These tunnel boring machines, such as the Hydroshield and EPB, are designed to stabilize the ground and handle different ground conditions, providing safety and efficiency during subway construction.

Hydroshield TBMs are ideal for soils with high water pressure, providing a shield against seepage. EPB (Earth Pressure Balancing) TBMs are suitable for mixed and soft soils, balancing soil pressure and avoiding collapse.

Closed shield TBMs are used in a variety of subway projects, including submarine outfalls, vertical shafts, and segmental tunnels. They are essential in the construction of subway infrastructure in urban and rural areas.

Advantages include safe and efficient excavation, the ability to handle different soil types, and minimized ground disruption. These TBMs ensure tunnel stability and environmental protection during construction.

Eurohinca has more than 20 years of experience and has completed more than 240 projects internationally. It uses advanced technology and specialized equipment, ensuring the precise and efficient execution of tunnels, with a focus on safety and quality.

Yes, closed shield TBMs are ideal for urban projects because of their ability to excavate in a controlled and safe manner in densely populated areas, minimizing surface disruption and impact.
