Influences under the Lima River
Construction of a subway crossing in the Lima River
The project of the sewerage collector in the Lima River consisted of the construction of a subway tunnel for the installation of a sewage pipeline under the riverbed. It used a Hidroshield DN2000 shielddesigned to cross terrains with different geological characteristics, guaranteeing the stability of the tunnel and minimizing environmental impacts.
General project details
Location: Rio Lima, Portugal
Main objectiveInstallation of a subway collector without affecting the river bed.
Geological conditionsGranite, clay and sand.
Technology usedHydroshield DN2000.
Total tunnel length: 287 meters.
Drilling sections:
210 meters in granite.
77 meters in clay and sand.
Technical specifications
Nominal diameter: 2,000 mm.
Method usedExcavation with Hidroshield shield and pipe jacking.
Continuous monitoring settlement and pressure control in unstable areas.
Logistics and technical challenges
The project presented significant challenges due to the combination of hard and soft soils, requiring constant monitoring and excavation adjustments.
Project highlights
Excavation in two different soil typeswith adaptations in the tunnel boring machine for each section.
Optimization of the sanitation systemimproving the wastewater conveyance infrastructure.
Use of Hidroshield technology to maintain tunnel stability in soils of varying strength.
Environmental and social impact
The construction of the collector on the Lima River improved the sanitation infrastructure without altering the river's ecosystem.
Reduction of environmental impactby using trenchless excavation techniques.
Modern and efficient infrastructureoptimizing the area's sanitation system.
Guaranteed safetywith continuous monitoring and stability control in the excavation.
