The cutterhead must allow for controlled intake of the soil and prevent volume loss that could lead to settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gravel Cutting Head<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>gravel and coarse granular soils<\/strong>, the head must be sturdy, wear-resistant, and capable of handling larger particles without jamming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following is being reviewed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maximum gravel size.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Particle size distribution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shape of the edges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abrasiveness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presence of boluses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Permeability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extraction system capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In gravel, the cutterhead openings, scrapers, protective guards, and material conveyance system are critical. If boulders or blocks are present, it must be assessed whether the tunnel boring machine can break them up, accommodate them, or if preliminary investigation and contingency measures are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rock-cutting head<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>rock<\/strong>, the selection depends on the strength, fracture behavior, abrasiveness, hardness, diameter, and continuity of the rock mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following are analyzed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Uniaxial compressive strength.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fracturing and RQD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abrasiveness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mineralogical hardness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presence of quartz.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discontinuities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Risk of clumping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need for cutting discs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The machine's torque and thrust capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In competent rock, cutting discs, specialized cutters, abrasion-resistant guards, and configurations designed to fracture the material can be used. In highly abrasive rock, tool wear and the need for intervention or maintenance must be evaluated as early as the bidding phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cutting head for mixed terrain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <strong>mixed-use properties<\/strong>, the face combines materials of varying strength, such as soil and rock, clay and gravel, backfill and blocks, or irregular transitions.
