Excessive or poorly designed pumping can cause a drop in the water table in the surrounding area, consolidation of soft soils, surface settlement, the washout of fine particles, instability of the riverbed, or damage to nearby structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the hydraulic risk is high, pumping must be combined with waterproofing barriers, bottom plugs, filters, external wells, monitoring, or prior soil treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water Control at the Tunnel Boring Machine's Inlet and Outlet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tunnel boring machine\u2019s entry and exit zones are particularly sensitive because they create an opening between the shaft and the surrounding ground.
