It is the length that directly determines the driving forces, the soil-pipe friction, the need for lubrication, tool wear, daily performance and, in some cases, the possible need for intermediate thrust stations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2221\" data-end=\"2471\">This length may be longer than the strictly necessary crossing if the wells are to be located outside the conditioned zone, for example, outside a road, railroad, waterway, dense urban area or an area with affected utilities.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"h3jftv\" data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2494\">Crossing length<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2496\" data-end=\"2751\">The <strong data-start=\"2499\" data-end=\"2520\">crossing length<\/strong> is the distance that needs to be bridged under an obstacle or infrastructure. It can be the width of a road, a railway platform, a river, a port area, a highway, an urban avenue or a service corridor.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2753\" data-end=\"3103\">This measurement is key for permitting and third-party constraints, but does not always represent the actual length to be driven. In many projects, the crossing requires safety clearances, minimum coverages or entry and exit points away from the obstacle, so the driving length may exceed the geometric length of the crossing.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"dm95g2\" data-start=\"3105\" data-end=\"3133\">Useful pipe length<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3135\" data-end=\"3400\">The <strong data-start=\"3138\" data-end=\"3166\">useful length of pipe<\/strong> is the part of the pipeline that is finally connected and operational. It is the length relevant to the hydraulic or service operation: sewerage, supply, drainage, gas, outfall, catchment or other infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3402\" data-end=\"3649\">It may not coincide exactly with the driving length because there may be connection sections, cuts, special pieces, chambers, wells, site adjustments or sections that are part of the construction process but not part of the final useful pipeline.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"ila9rg\" data-start=\"3651\" data-end=\"3692\">Why it is important not to confuse them<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3694\" data-end=\"3820\">Confusing these lengths can lead to errors in measurement, budgeting, planning and contractual scope. For example:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3822\" data-end=\"4361\">\n<li data-section-id=\"tmf0io\" data-start=\"3822\" data-end=\"3904\">Calculate thrusts with the crossing length instead of the actual driving length.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"9g19b5\" data-start=\"3905\" data-end=\"3999\">Budget only the width of the infrastructure crossed and not the distance between wells.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"uozrw0\" data-start=\"4000\" data-end=\"4123\">Failure to provide sufficient space for <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohinca.com\/en\/vertical-wells\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"4036\" data-end=\"4122\">vertical pits for driving and microtunneling<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1rl731b\" data-start=\"4124\" data-end=\"4181\">Underestimate lead time, friction, lubrication or production.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"y40wz0\" data-start=\"4182\" data-end=\"4263\">Failure to differentiate between constructed length and length actually useful for the network.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"pifwu0\" data-start=\"4264\" data-end=\"4361\">Omit conditionalities of connection with existing chambers, collectors, outfalls or pipelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"ghdlj7\" data-start=\"4363\" data-end=\"4383\">Practical example<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4385\" data-end=\"4800\">If a drive has to cross a 40-meter wide highway, that may be the <strong data-start=\"4469\" data-end=\"4490\">crossing length<\/strong>. However, if the attack and reception wells are to be located outside the easement area, the <strong data-start=\"4591\" data-end=\"4612\">driving length<\/strong> could be 70 or 90 meters.
