There is no universal TBM: each excavation system responds best to specific ground conditions, safety and face control.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"1090\">In an initial phase, Eurohinca analyzes the available geotechnical and hydrogeological information to define whether the project can be implemented with <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohinca.com\/en\/open-shield\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"719\">open shield<\/a>, <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohinca.com\/en\/closed-shield-epb\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"801\">EPB closed shield TBM<\/a> o <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohinca.com\/en\/closed-shield-hydroshield\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"871\">hydro shield<\/a>. This decision is part of the process of <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohinca.com\/en\/choice-of-tunnel-boring-machine\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"988\">choice of tunnel boring machine<\/a> and conditions safety, precision, performance and risk control during execution.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1eg4l6d\" data-start=\"1092\" data-end=\"1129\">Main selection criteria<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1507\"><strong data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1150\">Open shield:<\/strong> is usually valued in stable soils, with low water presence and conditions where the face can be kept under control during excavation. It is a suitable option when the geology allows working with direct or semi-direct access to the face, provided that the risk of instability, water ingress or loss of material is compatible with the method.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1509\" data-end=\"1926\"><strong data-start=\"1509\" data-end=\"1542\">EPB -Earth Pressure Balance-:<\/strong> is used when it is necessary to balance ground pressure at the face, especially in cohesive soils or soils where the excavated material can be conditioned to maintain stability. The <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohinca.com\/en\/closed-shield-epb\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1747\" data-end=\"1809\">EPB tunnel boring machine<\/a> allows to control the excavation pressure and reduce the risk of subsidence, over-excavation or loss of face.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"2325\"><strong data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"1944\">Hydroshield:<\/strong> is considered when there are saturated soils, high permeability, significant presence of water or the need to stabilize the face by mud pressure. The <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohinca.com\/en\/closed-shield-hydroshield\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2202\">hydro-shield for water-logged terrain<\/a> is especially relevant in crossings under rivers, coastal areas, outfalls, catchments or routes with high water table.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"19v5edh\" data-start=\"2327\" data-end=\"2360\">Data needed to decide<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2362\" data-end=\"2450\">To make the right choice between open shield, EPB and hydroshield it is necessary to study:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2589\"><strong data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2477\">Geology of the layout:<\/strong> type of soil or rock, presence of boulders, mixed soils, fracturing, abrasiveness and geotechnical variability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2591\" data-end=\"2736\"><strong data-start=\"2591\" data-end=\"2623\">Hydrogeological conditions:<\/strong> water table, permeability, water pressure, risk of water inflow and need for face control.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2738\" data-end=\"2855\"><strong data-start=\"2738\" data-end=\"2763\">Geometry of the work:<\/strong> diameter, length, depth, slope, radius of curvature and alignment tolerances.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2857\" data-end=\"3000\"><strong data-start=\"2857\" data-end=\"2880\">Environment crossed:<\/strong> roads, railroads, watercourses, buildings, existing services, urban areas or environmentally sensitive areas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3002\" data-end=\"3173\"><strong data-start=\"3002\" data-end=\"3028\">Construction risks:<\/strong> subsidence, over-excavation, loss of stability, tool wear, head blockage, water ingress or deviations in routing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3175\" data-end=\"3400\"><strong data-start=\"3175\" data-end=\"3211\">Logistics and auxiliary civil works:<\/strong> space available for <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohinca.com\/en\/vertical-wells\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"3236\" data-end=\"3322\">vertical pits for driving and microtunneling<\/a>, The project includes the management of sludge or excavated material, accesses, stockpiles and auxiliary equipment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3402\" data-end=\"3812\">In practical terms, the <strong data-start=\"3428\" data-end=\"3446\">open shield<\/strong> is associated with more stable and controllable terrain; the <strong data-start=\"3500\" data-end=\"3507\">EPB<\/strong> is used when earth pressure equilibrium is required; and the <strong data-start=\"3577\" data-end=\"3592\">hydro shield<\/strong> is selected when water, permeability or hydraulic pressure are determining factors.
