The choice of the appropriate TBM is a technical process that depends on the geotechnical, route requirements and the hydraulic or structural objectives of the project. Equipment selection is based on the following main parameters and criteria:<\/p>

\u2022 Type of project and required section:<\/strong> Determination of the diameter and type of tunnel to be built (non-visitable microtunnel, visitable tunnel, hydraulic conduit, service gallery or collector with segments).<\/p>

\u2022 Land conditions:<\/strong> Evaluation of cohesive soils, mixed soils, sands, gravels, transition to rock or presence of water table. This information defines if a head is required EPB<\/strong>, hydroshield (Slurry)<\/strong>, open shield<\/strong> or a TBM for rock<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u2022 Front pressure and ground stability:<\/strong> Analysis of the need for pressure control to prevent settlement or soil loss, especially in saturated, urban or sensitive soils.<\/p>

\u2022 Alignment and curvature requirements:<\/strong> Straight or curved layout, minimum admissible radii, geometrical tolerances, slopes and depth of the conduction. This conditions the guidance system (laser, gyroscopic) and the type of joint or ring used.<\/p>

\u2022 Length of section and thrust logistics:<\/strong> Estimation of the thrust required, possibility of intermediate stations (in MTBM) and capacity of the hydraulic or continuous feed system according to the construction method planned.<\/p>

\u2022 Characteristics of the pipe or voussoirs:<\/strong> Type of final lining (steel, concrete, precast segments), compressive strength and structural behavior against ground loads and TBM thrust.<\/p>

\u2022 Civil works prerequisites:<\/strong> Dimensioning of attack and reception wells, launching portals or galleries, crane capacity, accesses for piping and auxiliary equipment, energy and ventilation.<\/p>

\u2022 Necessary auxiliary systems:<\/strong> Sludge plant, pumps, conveyors, lubrication, material extraction systems, welding (if metal piping) and HSE equipment for work in confined spaces.<\/p>
